Every year, somebody who doesn’t work here walks into our Warwick, Maryland facility with a clipboard, a checklist, and zero interest in how nice we are. They open our logs. They watch our people work. They can ask anyone on the floor anything they want, and we like it that way, because the answers are already written down. Then they decide whether SunMed still gets to call itself a cGMP- and GACP-certified operation for another year.
This August, an ANAB-accredited certification body completed an independent audit of both our lab and our grow, and renewed our cGMP and GACP certifications through September 2027.
What These Certifications Cover
cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) is the standard the FDA applies to how food and dietary supplements are made. Our lab is certified to the Cannabis Safety Standard GMP Edition 2.0, built on 21 CFR Part 117 Subpart B, and we also hold the CFR 111 dietary supplement module. In plain terms: documented procedures, controlled processes, trained staff, a clean facility, product testing, and a paper trail that follows every batch from start to finish.
GACP (Good Agricultural and Collection Practice) is the same idea applied to the grow. It covers how plants are cultivated, handled, harvested, and stored, so what comes out of the greenhouse is consistent and clean before it ever reaches the lab.
Together they cover the full path from seed to shelf.
Reading about it is one thing. Here’s what cGMP actually looks like inside our lab, day to day.
Why Annual Recertification Matters
Certification isn’t a trophy you earn once and hang on the wall. It’s annual. Every twelve months, the whole operation has to prove it's still meeting the standard, not that it met it once when we first applied.
That means the work never gets to be a project. It has to be a habit. Every employee is trained, and the training is recorded. Log every cleaning, every calibration, and every batch by who did it and when. Every deviation from procedure written up and corrected. Cannabis isn’t federally regulated, so nobody makes a Maryland grower do any of this. We choose to hold ourselves to the standard the FDA uses for the food on your table, and then we choose to invite an outside party to check.
Most operators in this industry don’t. It’s expensive, it’s relentless, and there’s no cramming for it. To be ready on audit day is to have been ready every day before it. That’s the part we’re proudest of: when the auditor shows up, nothing changes here.
What This Means for Maryland Patients and Consumers
For patients and adult-use consumers, this certification means SunMed’s products come from a facility independently inspected each year, with consistent processes, inputs, and outcomes across batches.
For dispensary partners, it means working with a supplier whose documentation is already aligned with the standards regulators look for. And for Maryland’s broader cannabis industry, it reflects one approach to building a track record of consistency and accountability through third-party verification.
This certification reflects the SunMed team's ongoing work throughout the year—from documentation and training to day-to-day procedures. SunMed is grateful to its staff for maintaining these standards, and to the patients, consumers, and partners who rely on its products.
