How to Make Cannabutter and Cannabis Oil

Every cannabis brownie recipe begins with either cannabis oil or cannabutter. But how do you make them? And which works better? Let’s cover the basics!

Cannabis Oil

Made by infusing cannabis into a carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil, cannabis oil allows for precise dosing and easy incorporation into various recipes. Its lighter taste is ideal for those who want the benefits of cannabis without a strong herbal undertone in their brownies. Additionally, cannabis oil can be stored for an extended period, making it a convenient option for those who like to plan their cannabis-infused culinary adventures in advance.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oil (your choice)

  • ¼ ounce decarbolized cannabis (see instructions)

How to Prepare Cannabis Oil

1. Decarboxylation:

    • Preheat your oven to 245°F (120°C).

    • Grind the cannabis buds coarsely with a hand grinder.

    • Spread the ground cannabis evenly on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

    • Bake it in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to ensure even toasting.

2. Choosing and Preparing the Oil:

    • Select an oil for infusion. Common choices include coconut oil, olive oil, or canola oil, depending on your preference or recipe requirement.

    • Measure the oil based on the ratio you desire. A common ratio is 1 cup of oil to 1 cup of ground, decarboxylated cannabis.

3. Infusing the Oil:

    • Combine the oil and decarboxylated cannabis in a saucepan or slow cooker.

    • Heat the mixture on low heat (ideally between 160°F and 200°F) for 2 to 4 hours. This slow process helps infuse the oil without burning the cannabis. If using a slow cooker, this can be extended to 6-8 hours.

4. Straining the Oil:

    • Line a strainer with cheesecloth and place it over a large bowl or jar.

    • Slowly pour the oil and cannabis mixture through the cheesecloth and strainer. Let the oil drip through; avoid squeezing the cheesecloth to prevent excess plant material from entering the oil.

    • Discard the leftover plant material.

5. Storing the Cannabis Oil:

    • Transfer the strained oil into an airtight container.

    • Store it in a cool, dark place. The refrigerator is ideal for long-term storage.

Cannabutter

Made by simmering cannabis in butter, this method extracts both cannabinoids and terpenes, resulting in a more complex and robust infusion that retains many of the herbal smells of the weed you use.

While it may have a stronger herbal flavor compared to cannabis oil, cannabutter enthusiasts appreciate the traditional touch it brings to baked goods.

It's important to note that cannabutter has a shorter shelf life than cannabis oil (several weeks in the fridge or up to 6 months in the freezer), so it's best to use it relatively soon after preparation for optimal freshness.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter

  • ¼ ounce decarbolized cannabis (see instructions)

  • Optional: 1 cup water

How to Prepare Cannabutter

1. Decarboxylation:

  • Preheat your oven to 245°F (120°C).

  • Grind the cannabis coarsely with a hand grinder.

  • Spread the ground cannabis on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

  • Bake the cannabis in the oven for 30-40 minutes, stirring it every 10 minutes to ensure even toasting.

2. Infusing the Butter:

  • Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat.

  • Add the decarboxylated cannabis to the melted butter.

  • Keep the heat low (ideally between 160ºF and 180°F) and let the mixture simmer for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Be careful not to let the mixture boil.

3. Straining the Butter:

  • Set a funnel on top of a jar and line it with cheesecloth.

  • Once the butter has cooled slightly, pour it over the cheesecloth funnel and allow it to strain freely. Avoid squeezing the cheesecloth to prevent plant material from getting into your butter.

4. Storing the Cannabutter:

  • Transfer the strained cannabutter into a container or jar.

  • Store it in the refrigerator or freezer. Cannabutter can be kept in the fridge for several weeks and in the freezer for up to six months.

Are Cannabis Brownies Better with Cannabutter or Cannabis Oil?

Cannabis oil offers convenience and a lighter flavor. Cannabutter (i.e. cannabis infused butter) imparts a richer taste, but it can be harder to prepare since it can burn more easily. Oil and butter lead to different textures and flavors, and lots of regular brownie recipes use a mixture of both, so the choice between cannabis oil and cannabutter depends on your personal preference and recipe requirements. Experiment with both to find what you like most!

Brown Butter Pot Brownies Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

  • 1 cup cannabis-infused butter (cannabutter)

  • 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 1/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

In a saucepan, melt then simmer the unsalted butter over low heat. After a little while the butter will start to turn a golden brown color. Watch for small browned bits at the bottom of the pan, which are the milk solids caramelizing.

Once browned, remove from heat, pour into a bowl, and stir in the granulated sugar.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.

Sift together the cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder, and gradually add them to the wet mixture, stirring well.

Add the vanilla extract, and all-purpose flour to the batter, mixing until just combined.

In a separate saucepan, melt the cannabis-infused butter over low heat.

Incorporate the cannabis-infused butter into the brownie batter, ensuring an even distribution.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

Bake for approximately 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs, not wet batter.

Allow the brownies to cool before cutting into squares. Enjoy responsibly!

Note: Dosage can vary based on the potency of your cannabis-infused butter, so adjust servings accordingly for your desired experience.

Everything You Need to Know To Make Brownies with Cannabis

Mastering the art of baking with cannabis requires a bit of knowledge. From selecting the right strain to getting your dosing precise to learning essential infusion techniques, we’ll walk you through everything you need to elevate your homemade cannabis brownies to a whole new level of indulgence.

What Makes Better Cannabis Brownies: CBD or THC?

Choosing between CBD and THC for your cannabis brownies depends on your desired experience. THC offers a psychoactive high, while CBD provides a more relaxed, non-intoxicating effect. For a balanced experience, consider using a mix of both cannabinoids, allowing you to tailor the brownies to your preferences and tolerance.

What is the Recommended Dosage for Cannabis Brownies?

When it comes to dosage for cannabis brownies, it's important to consider individual tolerance and experience with cannabis. A general guideline is to start with a low dose, around 5-10 milligrams of THC, especially for beginners. More experienced users may opt for 10-20 milligrams. Carefully calculate the total THC content in your recipe based on the potency of your infused ingredient, whether it's cannabis oil or cannabutter.

Keep in mind that edibles take time to kick in, so wait at least 2-4 hours before considering additional servings. Patience is key to a pleasant and controlled cannabis experience. Always prioritize responsible consumption and tailor the dosage to your personal preferences and tolerance level.

What Strains Are Recommended for Making Brownies with Cannabis?

Opt for strains with balanced THC and CBD levels for a well-rounded experience. Popular choices include Snoop Dogg OG, our award-winning Indica strain, and Apple Fritter, a potent hybrid. Experiment with strains like Cannatonic for a higher CBD content, providing a milder, more relaxed effect. The strain you choose will influence the flavor profile and overall experience of your cannabis-infused brownies.

How Should I Store My Homemade Cannabis Brownies?

Store cannabis brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for an extended shelf life. For longer storage, freeze individually wrapped brownies, ensuring they are well-sealed to preserve freshness and potency.

What are the Effects of Cannabis Brownies?

The effects of cannabis brownies vary based on factors like dosage, individual tolerance, and the strain used. Typically, users can expect a delayed onset, with effects kicking in 1-2 hours after consumption (though you should wait up to 4 hours before deciding whether to have another). The experience may include relaxation, euphoria, and heightened sensory perception. Cannabis brownies also have medicinal effects, such as relieving symptoms of acid reflux. Start with a low dose for a controlled experience.

Are There Health Risks Associated with Consuming Cannabis Brownies?

Consuming cannabis brownies can pose some health risks. Overconsumption may lead to discomfort, anxiety, or paranoia. It's crucial to start with a low dose, especially for beginners. Additionally, individuals with certain health conditions or those on medication should consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating cannabis-infused edibles into their diet.

How Long Do the Effects of Brownies with Cannabis Typically Last?

The effects of cannabis brownies typically last 4-6 hours, but individual factors such as metabolism and tolerance can influence duration. It's crucial to plan accordingly, considering the time of consumption and potential activities, to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience without unexpected lingering effects.

Can I Use Store Bought Brownie Mix To Make Cannabis Brownies?
